We finished up another great week in second grade. It was a week full of interesting questions
as we explore new information. Here is a
look at our upcoming week:
Literature: This week we will be reading the chapters
“The Sugar Snow” and “Dance at Grandpa’s” in literature. Students
will learn about the process of tapping trees for maple syrup and how this
activity was both fun and helpful for the Ingalls family. Students will
also get to know some more of the extended Ingalls family as there is a square
dance at their grandparents’ house. As we read, we will keep practicing
finding main ideas within the chapters and passages.
Grammar: As we continue to study the writing process,
students will practice writing a rough draft based on the prewriting map they
learned to use last week. We will also continue with new Riggs
words.
History: We will now begin our unit on westward expansion
across the United States. Students will learn about the various
means of transportation that were used as pioneers moved west. This week,
we will discuss the different boats used (flat boats, keel boats, and
steamboats). Students will then learn about the Transcontinental
Railroad that was built by two competing railroad companies. On
Friday, we will tie our Great Hearts Day celebrations in with history, as we
will learn about the Pony Express and students will deliver great-hearted notes
in a Pony-Express manner.
Science: We will continue learning about the digestive
system this week. The students will be learning about the small intestines,
liver, pancreas, and large intestine. As we study each organ in the
digestive system, students will learn the location, function, and interesting
facts about each one. We will also continue to review the system as
a whole.
Important Notes:
-Don’t forget to sign your child up for the field trip on
February 28! The online form needs to be filled out by Monday, February
17. Also, make sure you sign up if you are interested in being a
chaperone and you have your fingerprint clearance card. There is no longer a limit to the number of
chaperones who can attend the field trip with us.
-This Friday we will celebrate “Great Hearts” Day. I
appreciate your donations to help us celebrate friendship. We have many fun activities planned that day,
including writing letters to classmates. As a reminder, we do not celebrate
with Valentines candy or cards at school.
Wishing you a wonderful week!
