Welcome
February! Our conversations in class are getting more and more
interesting. I just LOVE all the
questions I am asked each day. Students
are not satisfied with simple explanations, which make teaching so exciting!
Here
is a look at our upcoming week:
Literature:
This week we will read chapters five and six (“Sundays” and “Two Big Bears”) in
Little House in the Big Woods. As we read, we will continue to
practice picking out the main ideas of the chapters and paragraphs. Students
will also begin to learn how to write a five sentence expository paragraph and
we will use topics from Little House as inspiration for these
paragraphs.
Grammar/Riggs:
As mentioned above, we will be working on writing expository paragraphs. This
week our focus will be on the beginning process of writing by identifying three
main ideas that support a topic sentence. We will also have new
Riggs words this week.
History:
The depth of our history conversations has led us to some interesting
questions. Last week, a student asked, “Are
there still wars?” Students were shocked
to think that countries still were not able to find peaceful resolutions to
problems. Last week, the students were
introduced to the three main causes of the War of 1812. This week,
we will start by learning about the battle that inspired Francis Scott Key to
write the Star Spangled Banner. Then we will learn about two famous
ships from this time: the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) and the USS
Chesapeake. We will end the week by studying Andrew Jackson and the
Battle of New Orleans.
Science:
Now that we have learned about the relationships between cells, tissues,
organs, and system, we will begin our unit on the digestive system. We
will be doing lots of experiments (such as eating a cracker and seeing where
digestion begins) to help students understand what our bodies do to digest and
use food/energy. This week’s focus will be on the mouth, epiglottis,
esophagus, and stomach.
