Last week was such an exciting week. We were treated to a wonderful concert of old-time fiddle, banjo and bass music last Wednesday by the band Greenwood Sidee (http://www.greenwoodsidee.com/performances/). I also really enjoyed our celebration of friendship on Great Hearts day. Thank you for your donations of time and treats! It was a wonderful day.
Here is a look at each subject’s focus for
this week:
Literature: We continue on with the second
half of Chapter 8, “Dance at Grandpa’s” and Chapter 9, “Going to Town” of Little
House in the Big Woods. I especially enjoy reading the ninth
chapter with students and thinking about how the Ingalls children had never
been to a town before. It is always interesting having a discussion
about why the family decided to live in the Big Woods instead of in the town of
Pepin. I encourage you to ask your child to tell you what is
happening in the book and what they would enjoy/not enjoy about Laura’s life
Grammar/Riggs: This week’s focus will be on
editing the rough drafts that we have written. Students will
practice using editing marks such as triple underlined letters that need to be
capitalized and insertions for punctuation marks. We will also have
new Riggs words.
History: Now that we have discussed the boats
and trains that assisted pioneers in their movement west, we will focus on the
most famous way of traveling west: the covered wagon. Students will
learn about the decisions the pioneers needed to make about what items were
necessities and what they didn't need to bring. We will discuss the trails
across the country as well as hardships faced on the journey westward. Friday’s
lesson will focus on the sod houses built by settlers as they settled in the
west coast.
Science: Students will learn the last organs
that make up the digestive system and how they work together. We
will then move on to the excretory system and why it is a necessary bodily
system. For the rest of the week, we will be reviewing what students
have learned about cells and the digestive system. Students will
fill out a review sheet on Friday that they can use to help study for the
science test on Tuesday, March 4th.
Important Notes:
-Yearbooks can be purchased at http://www.archwaychandler.org/yearbooks. The price goes up after Friday!
-The class will need a “water parent” for the
Archway Olympics on Thursday, March 7. This
parent will stay with the class on that day and be responsible for pulling a
cooler with water for students. If you
are interested, please let me know.
-We are still in need of volunteers for the
Archway Olympics on Thursday, March 7th. If you are
interested in helping out with an event, sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/904044BA4AC238-fourth1.
-If you haven’t signed up for the field trip,
please do so as soon as possible. Please
note there is no limit to the number of chaperons who can attend. http://archwaychandler.org/general/pioneerfieldtrip
