What a week!
First, I would like to express my gratitude for a simply wonderful
birthday! It was fantastic to share my
day with such kind students and families!
Thank you for making my day special.
Students had a great attitude toward our mixed up schedule due to
standardized testing. Thank you so much
for sending your child in on time this week. We are all looking forward
to getting back into our normal routine. Here is a look at the curriculum
for the week.
Literature: We will continue studying Charlotte’s
Web by learning new vocabulary words, reading with expression, and
identifying the main ideas and important details within each chapter.
This week we will be reading chapters six through nine. We will learn
more about Wilbur’s new friend Charlotte, discover new facts about arachnids,
and hear of the Zuckermans’ plans for Wilbur.
Grammar: This week we will practice identifying
and correcting sentence fragments. Learning about this common writing
error will help our students improve their own writing and editing
skills. We will also have Riggs words on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
but there will be no homework on Thursday night.
Science: This will be our final week studying
simple machines. On Monday, we will discuss complex machines that include
two or more simple machines, and then students will work in groups to build a
machine together….what that machine is will be a surprise! Then on
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, students will be presenting their inventions
to each other. I would like all students to bring their machines in on
Tuesday.
History: We now move from the Civil War to our
unit on immigration and citizenship. We will begin this unit on Monday by
discussing why people began to move from other countries to the United States
and how the U.S. offered immigrants food, land, freedom, and
opportunities. We will learn about some of the conditions in Europe and
various countries that made many people want to come to the United States. Then
we will begin to discuss how they came to the United States of America and the
difficulties they faced along the way.
Important Notes:
-We have a half day this Thursday (with release
times at 12:15 and 12:30) and no school this Friday, April 18.
-Simple machine projects are due this Tuesday,
April 15! Contact me with any questions.
With gratitude,
Ms. Norris
