Week of May 12

Thank you for making teacher appreciation week so amazingly wonderful.  I am so grateful to work in such an appreciative and generous community.  I am so grateful for you kind and encouraging notes and gifts.  It has been a true honor to learn with your children this year.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

We are now moving into the final two weeks of school!  Here is a look at our studies for the coming week.

Literature: Wilbur is now at the fair and this week he will be meeting his competition, a pig named Uncle.  Charlotte interviews Uncle to learn more about him, and the students will also be practicing some interviewing skills.  We will also learn about a project that Charlotte is working on for herself.  She has some exciting news as well as some sad news for Wilbur.  Near the end of the week, we will find out what happens at the fair and if Wilbur’s life is still in danger or not. Students will have the chance to point out some admirable, award-worthy characteristics of both Wilbur and Charlotte.

Grammar/Riggs: This week in grammar, we will be studying helping verbs (she will run, I am studying) and students will practice finding the verb phrases which include the helping verbs and the main verb.  We will also have our last set of Riggs words for the year this week.

History: We will learn about Eleanor Roosevelt at the beginning of the week.  Then we will begin to learn about Jackie Robinson, a baseball hero who worked toward integration in major league baseball.  As the week draws to a close, we will learn about the Rosa Parks and the bus boycott for which she is famous.  As we learn about these leaders, we are compiling information in a biography booklet that your child will take home at the end of the unit.

Science: We continue to study magnets this week.  We will be discussing the geographical North Pole versus the location of the magnetic north pole, experiment with how to compare the strengths of two magnets, and read some books about magnets.  We will end the week with a fun Jeopardy game to review the units from the whole year.

Important Notes:
-We love our volunteers!!!  The Archway teachers would like to thank all of the parent volunteers with a breakfast at school on Thursday, May 15 at 8:15am (you can start to come in after dropping your kids off for school).

-Please begin to send in any Archway library books, books that are labeled “ACA,” or books that are labeled “DKN.”  We are trying to collect all the books that are currently being borrowed as the year comes to a close.
