Week of January 20

It is nice to be back in the swing of school.  I love the second semester of second grade because students are much more willing to ask questions and offer meaningful opinions.  We have had some really interesting discussions in class, especially in science.  Here is a look at our upcoming week in second grade:

Literature:  We have explored the setting of Little House in the Big Woods after reading the first chapter.  This week, we will focus more on the characters in the story.  We will look for hints in the book that help us come up with adjectives to describe Pa, Ma, Mary, and Laura.  The chapters covered in this coming week will be chapters 2 and 3.  At the end of the week, we will practice finding the main ideas from passages and writing summaries.

Riggs/ Grammar:  We will be introducing new words this week but since we have no school on Monday, it will be a review week for grammar.

History:  Last week, the students discovered why the thirteen original states needed to create new rules for their government, or the Constitution.  The story of the difficulty of this task was told, including how states had to compromise.  This week we will finish telling this story and look with more depth at the document itself.  We will learn about the purpose of the preamble, articles, and amendments.   We will talk about how the constitution sets up three branches of our government.  Students will be writing newspaper articles as if they were introducing the Constitution to the colonists, since the people had to approve of these new rules after they were written.  At the end of the week we will learn about the Bill of Rights.

Science: After talking about cells last week, the students will get the chance to look at cells through microscopes.  They will be observing, discussing, and drawing what they see.  We will also be starting small flip books to help the students remember facts about cells, tissues, organs, and systems and how they are all related.  On Friday we will end the week by discussing different types of cells.

Have a great week!
