We had a
great end to our week this past week as we released our painted lady
butterflies and learned from our guest speaker, Mr. Thurman about different
types of insects. His collection was amazing! Here is a look at our short, upcoming week.
Literature: We will continue to discuss cause
and effect. We will begin the week by reading another version of the
story of Demeter and Persephone. Since this myth explores the reason for
the four seasons, we will review how the tilt of the Earth on its axis affects
the weather and seasons. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will learn about
the hero Heracles (you may be more familiar with his Roman name, Hercules) and
his mighty deeds.
Riggs/Grammar: There will be no new Riggs words
this week, and we will continue to review types of sentences and punctuation
for grammar.
History: This week in history, we will discuss
the Olympics. These games originated in the city-state of Olympia.
We will reflect on what we know of the Olympic games today and compare that
with how the games actually started. Students will learn about some of
the games and awards of the original Olympics.
Science: During this short week, we will begin to study solitary
and social insects. Students will discover which insects live in colonies
and work together (social insects) and which insects fend for themselves.
We will explore and discuss benefits and drawbacks to each type of
living. In other science news, the insects that began as mealworms
are now entering the adult stage of the life cycle!
Important Notes:
-This Wednesday, November 27, is a half
day. Release times will be at 12:15 and 12:30, and we will not have
lunch. Pack a large snack on Wednesday!
-No school Thursday or Friday, November 28 and
29. I wish you and your family a happy
Thanksgiving!
-It
is getting chilly outside! If you want your child to be able to wear his/her
sweater in class, it must be an Archway sweater. Other jackets or
sweaters can only be worn at recess.
