Week of October 28

Each week my students surprise me with their wonder and curiosity.  I am finding it takes longer to present new information, especially in science because of all the thoughtful questions.  I love how students are starting to share more in class with a confidence that encourages others to share too.  I am looking forward to another great week!

Literature: We will continue to read short stories, but this week we will practice comparing two versions of the same story. We will read multiple versions of “The Blind Men and the Elephant,” “The Lion and the Mouse,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”  Students will be looking for subtle differences in details as well as major changes in the stories.  They will also get to practice using Venn diagrams some more, which are great tools for comparing stories or items.

Grammar/Riggs: We will continue to learn new Riggs words this week.  In grammar, we will focus on adjectives.  Students will learn that adjectives answer the questions “what kind?” “which one?” and “how many” to help describe a noun or pronoun.

History: Students took home a family tree assignment this weekend.  We will take some time on Monday for students to share their family trees and anything interesting they learned about their families.  We will then be discovering many useful objects that were invented in ancient China.  One item that was discovered in China was silk, so we will take two days to study the process involved in getting silk from silkworms.  At the end of the week, we will take a moment to compare the ancient cultures of China, India, and Japan and remember how much we have already learned this year.

Science: There was quite a buzz when projects were assigned this week. Students are already reporting interesting facts that they have discovered about their insects.  The first research assignment about the anatomy of the insect is due on Monday.  Students should make a trip to the library to practice using this valuable resource to find information.  In class, we will continue to study the senses that insects have (some can taste with their feet, for example!) and construct a foldable project highlighting some interesting facts.  At the end of the week we will return to the insect collections to carefully look for some of the body parts that insects use to sense the world around them.

Important Notes:

-This Monday is the last day to turn in Box Tops.

-Picture retakes are this Friday, November 1.  Retake forms will go home on Monday.

-Thank you for all the wonderful basket donations as well as your support of our Medieval Faire booth!  It will be a wonderful event thanks to amazing volunteers!
