Week of September 15

I am looking forward to another great week in second grade!  Here is a preview:

Literature: We will be reading chapters five and six of Sarah, Plain and Tall this week, and our focus will be on the characters in the book.  Pa, Caleb and Anna are getting to know Sarah a bit more and it seems as though she enjoys Kansas but still misses Maine.  In the book, Sarah draws with charcoal, so our second grade students will have them same chance this week.  We will also discuss different points of view, comparing how Anna and Caleb look back on the past few years of their lives and see certain events differently.
Grammar/Riggs: We will continue learning new Riggs words this week. Students should bring their graded Riggs tests from the previous test day home each Tues-Friday.  Students are given time each morning to correct their tests.   In grammar this week, we will be studying when to use quotation marks and when words are underlined.

History:  Last week we wrapped up our study of Japan with a fish kite craft.  It was a fun way to learn about Children’s Day, which is celebrated on May 5 in Japan.  This week we will begin our unit on Ancient India.  We will begin by studying the location of India and how we can know about ancient times.  For the second half of the week, we will begin to study one of India’s important religions, Hinduism.  If you have any knowledge about or artifacts from India that you would like to share with the class, please let me know.  Students are also welcome to do any extra projects at home regarding India.  These projects could include researching languages, parks, animals, inventions, climates, holidays, clothing, or food in India.
Science:  At the beginning of this week, we will discuss the season of spring and what plants and animals do as the land and air warm up after winter.  Then we will spend a few days reviewing the characteristics of each season.  We will also link our science studies to the poem entitled, “Something Told the Wild Geese” by Rachel Field.  On Friday, we will start our discussion of how water moves on Earth.
