The chicks spent some time outside in my garden this afternoon. They are expert cultivators - they use their feet to scratch around looking for insects. They are fascinating to watch as they figure out each new situation, sound, and environment. My daughters have cared for them so well that they are not afraid to be picked up. They will often contently stand in our hands, or on our shoulders. Here are some pictures from today.
The chicks preen each other - picking the fluff as new feathers grow.
This chick is spreading out her growing wing feathers. They are starting to attempt to fly. I did have to find a bin with higher walls.
I am caring for 6 chicks. In a few weeks they will move to a farm in Eloy.
The fuzz and fluff is being replaced by feathers. This week we observed more tail feathers.
