Week of August 19

I was thrilled to see so many parents at curriculum night!  I am excited about working with each one of you to encourage, support, and challenge your child this year.  Here is a look at our upcoming week:
Literature: This week we will be focusing on a short story that originated in Mexico entitled, “El Pajaro Cu.”  This story teaches readers about the dangers of vanity along with offering an explanation for why the owl hoots each night.  Students will enjoy reading the story with expression as well as making their own colorful birds, finding cause and effect relationships within the story, and acting out a reader’s theater of the tale.  On Friday they will have the chance to write their own myths about owls.

Riggs/Grammar: We will continue to review the phonograms this week and work on forming the letters neatly and carefully.  On Monday we will discuss end mark punctuation (periods, question marks, and exclamation points) and students will continue to practice them through the course of the week.

History: After taking our map quiz on Monday, we will begin a closer look at North America.  Students will have the chance to identify key landmarks within the United States such as the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, the Great Plains, the Mississippi River, and the Great Lakes.  We will look at pictures of these areas to compare and contrast them as well as acknowledge the beauty found within our country.  We will finish the week by briefly studying Canada and Mexico.  The students learned about Mexico in first grade and they will do an in-depth study of Canada in third grade, so this year we will focus on their geographical location and landforms.

Science: This week we will continue our study of life cycles.  On Monday and Tuesday we will be looking at the life cycle of frogs!  I love sharing the excitement of this transformation with my students!  The students will put their fingers in cooked tapioca to experience what a frog egg feels like, and we will also add observations to our science field books.  On Thursday we will quickly cover the life cycle of a butterfly (which we will study in detail in our second quarter) and then we will finish the week by beginning to study the parts of a plant.

Important Notes:

-Please make sure you have taken the papers out of your child’s Friday folder, signed the chart, and that the Friday folder is sent back to school tomorrow.

-Most of you have been signing your child’s agenda each night.  Thank you!  This is a great habit to get into right away.  If you have not been looking at and signing the agenda, please make sure you check it each night.
